Montreal Canadiens

The Canadiens are a tough team to figure out, but with recent huge wins over the Devils and Rangers, maybe things are getting figured out. Montreal is currently in third place in the Northeast Division with 55 points based on their 25-25-5 record, which also lands them at 9th in the East, with only a few games to make up to get into the eighth and last playoff slot. >> More alt

About The Montreal Canadiens

As they begin the second half of the season, the positives are up front for Montreal, beginning with the team’s points and assists leader, center Tomas Plekanec, who has 52 points on 13 goals and 39 assists. Plekanec is followed closely by the Canadiens’ top goal-scorer, leftwing Mike Cammalleri, who has 26 goals and 21 assists. Montreal was planning for rightwing Brian Gionta to bring something to the table this season; hindered by injury early on, Gionta (25 points, 13 goals) has come on strong since his return, and contributing as if he never missed any time at all.

Marc-Andre Bergeron has been the surprise offensive defenseman with 28 points (10 goals, 18 assists), while the other three two-end players, defenders Roman Hamrlik 19 points, 14 assists), Jaroslav Spacek (16 points, 13 assists), and Andrei Markov (16 points, 13 assists) all have sufficient numbers and decent plus/minus ratings, keeping in mind, however, that the first two have played most of the season, while Markov has tallied those stats in only 20 games. Look for these talented two-way defenders to really make a difference during the second half of the season.

Montreal seems to have many of the tools needed to move up in the standings and gain a playoff berth by the end of the second half, but they need to stay healthy and find more consistency at both ends of the ice in order to do so. Get tickets now and watch the Canadiens play out the first season of their second one hundred years, and see if they can add to their all-time NHL-leading list of Stanley Cup Championships.

2009 Season Preview

The Montreal Canadiens have made significant additions as well as deletions to the 2009-2010 roster. Currently the team has 19 players which are under one way contracts. The four that will most likely fill the team’s roster are Carey Price, Sergei Kostitsyn, Matt D'Agostini and Gregory Stewart. With these added to the others for a total of 23 players, the Montreal Canadiens salary cap is at about $56 million. This will be the team’s 101st season playing hockey and they will start the year off with a revamped starting line. Their defensive group may be bigger than in the past years but they don't seem as agile on the ice. The team should finish in the top 3 or 4 by the end of the year and have a good chance of making the playoffs if they focus on the team's many strengths and draw from past experiences.
