The teams struggle in the ‘70s and ‘80sturned the fan base off, but a rejuvenation in the late ‘80s by Buddy Ryan that had the Eagles in the playoffs six out of nine seasons from 1988 to 1996. The team was led by the “Gang Green” defense, which featured Reggie White, Jerome Brown, Clyde Simmons, Seth Joyner, Wes Hopkins, Byro Evans, Eric Allen, and Andre Waters.

The team offered serious Super Bowl contending teams with a new head coach, Andy Reid, and quarterback Donovan McNabb. That club won the NFC East division title five times in six years from 2001 to 2006. The Super Bowl appearance in 2004 marked the pinnacle of the Eagles’ success.

2008 Season Preview

Donovan McNabb’s time is coming to end in Philadelphia as his years as a mobile quarterback have taken a toll on his body and the franchise is not sure when to replace him. Quarteback Kevin Kolb is waiting in the wings and a fan base that demands wins and a Super Bowl is growing restless with McNabb leading the team, especially after an 8-8 finish last season.

The Eagles have offensive woes in other areas though, before they need to address the quarterback situation. The wide receivers need a serious upgrade. The Eagles are set at tight end with L.J. Smith and running back with Brian Westbrook.

The defense continues to be stingy and the front office intends to keep it that way. Cornerback Asante Samuel, defensive end Chris Clemons, and linebacker Rocky Boiman were all signed to improve the defense or replace hole left by players leaving via free agency.

The house at Lincoln Financial Field will be fans ready to boo or cheer in a moments notice. The division schedule gives the Eagles tough games with the Giants and the Cowboys through out the season, games that will make the difference between the playoffs and another offseason embittered by angry fans.
