Team History
The Kansas City Chiefs will forever be known as the team to play in the first Super Bowl. Though they lost, they played in the first of what would become one of the biggest annual events. The Chiefs would avenge the first loss with a Super Bowl title in 1969. The team was actually quite successful in the days of the AFL, winning three AFL Championships.

The success would not be duplicated until the ‘90s when they would win three more AFC West division titles. The club has yet to win another Super Bowl. The teams of the ‘90s were filled super stars. Linebacker Derrick Thomas, cornerback Dale Carter, and safety Deron Cherry were the faces of a monster defense. The Chiefs began its tradition of great running backs with Christian “The Nigerian Nightmare” Okoye. Okoye’s career would be cut short by a knee injury, but the Chiefs replaced him with Marcus Allen.
The team began the 21st century with an emphasis on offense and continued the running back tradition with Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson. Both backs were the focus of the offense and have produced Pro Bow seasons. The Chiefs have not able to find a quarterback to complete the offensive explosion, leaving star players like tight end Tony Gonzalez with tons of talent but no chance to exploit it.
The Chiefs are in the midst of reorganization. Dick Vermeil’s departure has left the franchise searching for a new plan. The team first needs to find a quarterback. Damon Huard lost the starting job to Brodie Croyle mid-through the season, but neither impressed very much. The stagnant offense needs a quarterback to ignite it, and might find one in this year’s draft. It appears that the Chiefs are willing to let Huard and Croyle fight it out though.
The addition of a healthy Larry Johnson will aid the offense, but the Chiefs still need to give him a line to run behind. The Chiefs are expected to take one of the four highly-touted offensive tackles with the fifth pick. The team has used free agency to bolster the defense, signing linebacker Demorrio Williams and resigning defensive end Jarad Allen.
Fans at Arrowhead Stadium will be sure to see an improved running game this next season, and hopefully they will see a clear number one option at quarterback.
