Houston Texans

Team History

The Houston Texans came into the league in 2002 to replace the Oilers franchise that left in 1997 and became the Tennessee Titans. The franchise has struggled in its first six seasons, compiling a 32-64 record. The team did manage to become the first team to win its season opener in its first two seasons, though. >> More alt

The early teams were expected be led by quarterback David Carr, but ultimately he would never emerge as a true franchise quarterback. The club has begun the search for that franchise player, and even had its choice of Reggie Bush or Vince Young in the 2006 draft, but instead chose to address defensive needs and pick defensive end Mario Williams. The draft pick was lauded as a huge mistake, but the Texans justified the pick by stating that the team was addressing its greatest need.

It is still too early to tell, but Vince Young is struggling at the quarterback position and Reggie Bush has yet to run for 1,000 in a season. The Texans continued to draft defensive, landing 2006 defensive rookie of the year DeMeco Ryans in the second round in 2006.

The club does appear headed down the right path, as they finished the 2007 season 8-8 in a very tough AFC and an exceptionally difficult AFC South.

2008 Season Preview

The 2008 offseason has to be about improving the offense. The quarterback position is unsettled ever since David Carr was released and the running game is relying on Ahmed Green, a player who is trying to beat age as well as the linebacker to the corner.

The Texans have the 18th pick in the draft and may see Jonathon Stewart, a running back from Oregon, fall to them. Of course the Texans are simply waiting for Andre Davis, Andre Johnson, or Kevin Walter to emerge as a true receiving threat, but that will probably fall in place when the quarterback question does.

The Houston Texans hope to bring playoff football to Reliant Stadium for the first time. The tough AFC South schedule will prove difficult, but the Texans’ defense will also make every game worth watching.
