While most experts had the San Francisco 49ers ranked at the very bottom of the NFL prior to last season, the 49ers surprised everyone by finishing at 8-8 (6-2 home, 2-6 away) in addition to leading the league in games in which they did not allow a touchdown (5). The consensus seemed to be that this team did not have a good enough quarterback or wide out, or that tight end Vernon Davis perform as impressively as he did. Given the facts that Alex Smith turned things around after having the offense handed over to him in Week 7, Vernon Davis became the team’s season-leading receiver, and rookie wide receiver Michael Crabtree flourished almost immediately upon ending his five-game holdout, the Niners not only proved the critics wrong last year, but have quite a good chance of winning at least ten games and maybe even their division in 2010!

Considering he only played in the final eleven games of last season, Alex Smith (225 of 372, 2,350 YDS, 18 TD) put up some admirable numbers, and fans are anxious to see what he can do in a full over the course of a full schedule. Davis (78 REC, 965 YDS), who led San Francisco in receiving, recorded 13 touchdown receptions, tied for most in season by tight end in NFL history with Antonio Gates (2004), while Crabtree followed in second with 48 receptions, 625 yards, and 2 touchdowns, while appearing in the same last eleven games as Smith. In the backfield it was Frank Gore (229 carries, 1,120 YDS, 10 TD) who led the 49ers rushing efforts, tying the single-season franchise record with his career-high 10 touchdowns, adding five 100-yard rushing games in 2009 – giving him 20 total for his career, tying him with Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe Perry for most in San Francisco history, and resulting in his fourth consecutive 1,000-yard season. The Niners also improved at backup QB when they acquired free agent David Carr from the Giants, as Carr is considered a definite upgrade to previous backup Shaun Hill who actually started the first six games in ’09.
It was on defense where linebacker Patrick Willis led the charge, while heading the charts with 152 tackles, 114 solos, 38 assists, and 8 tackles for loss, in addition to making 4 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 8 pass breakups, 3 interceptions, and 1 touchdown. Wow, not much more to say there! San Francisco (44 team sacks) had four guys with five or more sacks; team-leader Manny Lawson (68 tackles, 6 for loss, 3 forced fumbles) had 6.5 from his linebacker spot, defensive end Justin Smith (55 tackles, 4 for loss, 2 forced fumbles) and linebacker Ahmad Brooks (3 tackles for loss, team-high 5 forced fumbles) both had 6, and Parys Haralson (45 tackles, 7 for loss) added 5 from another LB position. Rounding out the top defender list were secondary players Dashon Goldson at safety and Dre’ Bly at one corner, with Goldson leading the way with 4 interceptions in addition to being the team’s second-leading tackler (94 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 forced fumbles), and Bly topping the passes defended column with 13 in addition to his 2 forced fumbles and 3 interceptions. This team really gets after the ball!
Be on the lookout for San Fran to be hanging around the top of the NFC come playoff time, with maybe even some Coach of the Year rumors for Head Coach Mike Singletary if they do. With all of the potential that this team brings into the upcoming season, fans really should order their San Francisco 49ers tickets right away, because Candlestick Park in San Francisco, California is going to be the place to be when the Niners kick things off this year!
San Francisco 49ers 2010 Regular Season Schedule
Currently, the team is still trying to rebuild. There is a fight over the starting quarterback position between Shaun Hill and Alex Smith. The San Francisco 49ers picked up Michael Crabtree in the hopes he can fit into their offense and be the key player for whichever quarterback the team decides on. There is a lot of work to be done and the players need to step up to give the quarterbacks a chance to do their job and throw touchdown passes. It looks to be a slightly rocky season, but with new talent and if the team can choose who their starting quarterback will be, there just might be a chance for the team to relive its glory days of the 1980's and 1990's.
