Up until the Tampa Bay Buccaneers changed hands in 1996 the team’s history was looking as desolate as the New Orleans Saints. The franchise had a couple of good years but quickly became the joke of the league with the bright orange uniforms to match. Playoff tickets were not even something to be considered throughout the ‘80s and much of the early ‘90s. It was the hiring of Tony Dungy as head coach that would turn things around in Tampa Bay and make them division favorites annually.

The team was built on defense and a ground game. Warrne Sapp, Simeon Rice, Hardy Nickerson, Derrick Brooks, John Lynch, and many others made the Cover 2 the dominant defense for the next decade as the Bucs relied on Warrick Dunn and Mike Alstott to share the load at running back, with Dunn’s quick feet and Alstott’s unstoppable forward momentum making him the premier running fullback for years in the NFL. Dungy created the defensive machine, but Jon Gruden added the offensive imagination to take the Tamp Bay Bucs to the Super Bowl in 2002. The Bucs were led by their typical strong defense and an offense managed by quarterback Brad Johnson. The team had a rare offensive explosion and beat the Raiders 48-21. Bucs playoff tickets have not had the same hype since.
This season the Bucs are hoping to return to the playoffs after their surprise NFC South division title last season. Jeff Garcia returns, but is surrounded by an aging receiver core and two running backs, Earnest Graham and Warrick Dunn, who are far from Pro Bowl picks. Still, this is very similar to the team last season that made Bucs playoff tickets a reality by playing a strong defense and hitting on big plays. Galloway and Hilliard are still capable of making those plays despite playing into their 30s.
The key will be the defense. No longer is the defensive roster a list of Pro Bowl players. Instead Derrick Brooks leads a collection of very good players that include Barrett Ruud, Jovan Haye, Tanard Jackson and Ronde Barber that collaborate to make one of the most solid defensive efforts in the league. Any break in this team approach and the fan say good bye to playoff tickets. The NFC South is again a mystery until the Saints can play to their full potential, so the Bucs and really any team is still in the hunt for the postseason realistically.
