New York Jets

After the arrival of “Broadway” Joe Namath in 196, the team would increasingly improve. Namath's first season with the team would have them finishing 8-5-1, their best record at the time. Namath passed for 4007 yards in the 14 game season. He was the first professional football player to pass for over 4000 yards in a single season. In fact, passing for 3000 yards was considered excellent passing. It was apparent that Namath was going to be key to the success of the team in those early years. >> More alt

About The New York Jets

In 1968 under the guidance of Namath, the New York Jets moved to the top of the AFL, defeating the Oakland Raiders 27-23. This meant that the New York Jets would be one of the two first teams to embark into the first Super Bowl. During a pre-game press conference, Namath was heckled by Colt fans. He commented on the lack of respect his team had gotten to this point and then told the hecklers “We're gonna win this game. I guarantee you.” While a cocky comment, it would prove to be true ad the New York Jets went on to beat the Colts 16-7.

Joe Namath couldn't play the game forever and in 1977 he left the New York Jets. Walt Michaels was hired and would stay with the team for six years. Unfortunately in his first season with the team the New York Jets would finish with a 3-11 record. During the 1980 season, Richard Todd would basically implode the team with a 30 interception season. The team went down with him finishing with a disappointing 4-12 record, last place in the AFC East. That wasn't even the lowest point of the season. The clincher was when the New York Jets lost o the 0-14 New Orleans Saints, the Saints only win that season.

In 1984, the New York Jets tickets were being sold for their new home, the Meadowlands. Their lease for the use of Shea Stadium had expired and instead of negotiating a new deal, the team decided a move would be better. In their last game at Shea Stadium, the team lost to the Steelers 34-7. Strangely enough their first game in the new Meadowlands Stadium would be against the Steelers. They would lose this 1984 game as well, 23-17.

During the 2000 NFL draft, the New York Jets managed to have four first round picks. The team picked up Shaun Ellis, John Abraham, Anthony Becht and quarterback Chad Pennington. The coach that Parcells had handpicked to succeed him quit after one day on the job, leaving a napkin “I resign as HC of the NYJ”. Instead, Parcells promoted Al Groh to the head coach position. After only one year coaching, Groh would resign and start coaching college football. Percells also left and was replaced by Terry Bradway. New Coach Herman Edwards and the New York Jets were only mediocre during the next few years. New York Jets sales would suffer because of the teams lack of impressive finishes.

2009 Season Preview

This season the New York Jets with new head coach Rex Ryan have some hard work on their hands. Ryan is outspoken and likes talking with the media, always having something to say. Unlike the previous head coach, Ryan is quite a bit more player-friendly and the initial buzz has all been positive. We will see what happens though when the New York Jets tickets stop selling because the team goes on a losing streak, which is quite possible with a new rookie quarterback starting.
