Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs have found one of the best young running backs in Jamaal Charles, who is entering his fourth NFL season out of Texas, but KC still needs a bit of work to do in order to really put things together and get back to winning games this season. Having finished 2009 at 4-12 (1-7 home, 3-5 away), the Chiefs need to improve on defense a bit and need to add some talent at wide out and tight end to support Matt Cassel in his second year in Kansas City. >> More alt

About The Kansas City Chiefs

Similar to the Rams, Lions, and Buccaneers, the Chiefs entered last season with a new head coach, and also a new GM who handpicked Matt Cassel to be his quarterback. While Kansas City did get one signature win this year, when they knocked off the defending champion Steelers, that does not come close to wiping away a disappointing 4-12 campaign – even though it was a two game improvement over the previous year. Three of KC’s four victories came after releasing Larry Johnson, who was probably their most prominent player at that time, but Charles filled in more than adequately for the departed Johnson and this change, along with other changes and signs of improvement at the top of the organization, all provide hope that the Chiefs can once again become a feared playoff contender some time soon.

Called upon to fill some pretty big shoes, Charles helped to eradicate any regrets the Chiefs may have had over letting Johnson go by becoming the fifth player in franchise history to rush for 1,000+ yards with a 5.0 yards per carry average during the course of the season, while running for a team-record 259 yards in a 44-24 win over Denver in the last game of the season, and leaving fans anxious for what 2010 may have in store. As for the passing game, Cassel joined Steve DeBerg by tying the record for touchdowns by a first-year KC quarterback with 16. The Chiefs’ leading receiver was Chris Chambers, which is both good and bad; bad because Chambers did not join the team until Week 9 but still topped all other receivers, and good because he did provide a needed second-half spark to the season, giving hope for increased output this year, although he is an unrestricted free agent. Additionally, the Chiefs added significant depth to the backfield when they recently signed unrestricted free agent running back Thomas Jones from the Jets; Jones was the NFL’s third-leading rusher in ’09 (331 carries, 1,402 YDS, 14 TD) and ranks second only to LaDainian Tomlinson (also a 2010 free agent) in yards rushing since 2005, while also being ranked 28th on the career rushing list with 9,217 yards – only 190 behind Earl Campbell. If ever the term “Two-headed Monster” was applicable, Charles and Jones should fit that description in KC this year!

Moving to the defense, it was linebacker Demorrio Williams who led Kansas City with 117 tackles and 95 solos, next to Derrick Johnson who tied an NFL record with two interceptions returned for touchdowns from the other LB spot in a Week 17 drubbing of the Broncos in Denver. Upfront, defensive end Tamba Hali led the D with 8.5 sacks and 4 forced fumbles, while in the secondary safety Mike Brown (also an unrestricted free agent in 2010) was second on the team in tackles (103) but first in assists (24), while cornerbacks Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr held down the outsides with Flowers (65 tackles, 58 solos, 7 assists) leading with 23 passes defended and 5 interceptions and Carr (62 tackles, 56 solos, 6 assists) just behind with 19 passes broken up but only 1 pick.

With Matt Cassel leading the offense, behind the running of Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones, this KC team should definitely be able to make substantial improvements and quite possibly turn things around in the AFC West. What this all means is that fans should get their Kansas City Chiefs tickets right away in order to witness KC’s return to gridiron prominence at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.

2009 Season Preview

Well, compared to last year, the Kansas City Chiefs are already in a better position than the previous year. The Kansas City Chiefs are probably the most improved team in the west. With the Broncos falling apart, the Chargers not doing much to improve their team and the Raiders putting all their eggs in one basket with JaMarcus Russell and Jeff Garcia, the Kansas City Chiefs ticket buyers will surely have a better reason to cheer on their team this season. The 2009 season in the west is leaning towards the Kansas City Chiefs to win it.
