While the 2009 Indianapolis Colts fell just one win short of every team’s ultimate goal, reaching the Super Bowl in their new head coach’s first season is still quite an accomplishment. The Colts have no major issues heading into the 2010 season – especially after having unexpectedly discovered two young and talented wide receivers in Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon – and are currently the number one or two team favored to take home the crown next season, alternating the top spot with the Saints depending on which poll or ranking system you look at. Either way, this is still a very special team, and a great ticket to get your hands on.

The Indianapolis Colts are seemingly always expected to win but also always seem to be able to fly under the radar and out of the limelight while racking up some very impressive stats to go along to all the wins. Indy has won an NFL-record 23 consecutive regular-season games, surpassing the 2006-08 New England Patriots for the longest streak in history; they became the first team in NFL history with seven consecutive 12-win seasons; the team joined the San Francisco 49ers (1997), Philadelphia Eagles (2004) and New England Patriots (2007) as the only teams since 1990 to clinch their divisions by the eleventh game of the season; they became the first NFL team in history to win five consecutive games after trailing in the fourth quarter of each (Weeks 7-12); they finished the season with seven fourth-quarter comeback victories, also the most in NFL history. The Indianapolis Colts have 115 regular-season wins since the beginning of the 2000 season – the most by a team in a single decade, having passed the San Francisco 49ers teams who racked up 113 during in the 1990s.
National Football League MVP Peyton Manning moved into fourth-place all-time, past Johnny Unitas and Fran Tarkenton, in wins by a starting quarterback (131), while putting up the kind of numbers that everyone has come to expect – 393 completions (68.8%), 4,500 yards, 33 touchdowns, and a 99.9% passer rating. Besides the welcome emergence of young targets Garcon (47 REC, 765 YDS, 4 TD) and Collie (60 REC, 676 YDS, 7 TD), Reggie Wayne (100 REC, 1,264 YDS, 10 TD) recorded 100+ receptions for the second time in his career, while tight end Dallas Clark (100 REC, 1,106 YDS, 10 TD) became only the third tight end ever in the NFL to rack up 90+ receptions, 1,000+ receiving yards, and 10+ touchdowns in one season, along with Tony Gonzalez and Todd Christensen, while becoming only the second tight end ever to record 100+ receptions in a season, next to Gonzalez as well.
Contrary to the big names made famous by the offense, and other than defensive end Dwight Freeney, the Indianapolis Colts’ defense is made up of a bunch of hardworking, ball-hawking, players that are known more for their work as a team than by individual name. It is linebacker Clint Session who leads the team in tackles (103) and solos (84) in addition to having 3 tackles for loss, 1 forced fumble, and 2 interceptions – one of which he returned for a touchdown. Safety Antoine Bethea led the Colts with 25 assists and 4 interceptions, while cornerback Jacob Lacey led with 13 defended passes, while adding 3 interceptions – returning one for a touchdown as well. Finally, holding down the opposition from the end positions were Robert Mathis, with 9.5 sacks and a team leading 5 forced fumbles, and Dwight Freeney who led the way with 13.5 sacks. The Colts have also just recently re-signed their second-leading tackler and captain, middle linebacker Gary Brackett (99 tackles, 80 solos, 19 assists, 1 sack, 1 interception), to help keep this blue collar D intact.
With Peyton setting the explosive tone from underneath center and Dwight Freeney heading up a very tough defense, there is no doubt that this team can once again finish atop the AFC and contend for their second Super Bowl victory.
