Western Kentucky University is a public university in Bowling Green, Kentucky, which was formally founded by the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1906, though its roots reach back a quarter-century earlier. The university is located in Bowling Green, KY, USA, and the president is Dr. Gary A. Ransdell. Their official uniform colors are red and white, they are nicknamed Hilltoppers and Lady Toppers, and their mascot is Big Red. The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers is the name for all of the men's intercollegiate athletic teams that play for Western Kentucky University. The facility is currently being expanded to at least 22,000 seats in preparation for the Hilltoppers' impending move to the highest level of NCAA football competition, Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly known as Division I-A. This move will be complete in 2009. WKU football was a member of the Gateway Football Conference through the 2006 football season, and then began its 2-year transition into becoming a full FBS, formerly I-A member. In 2009, they will play a full FBS schedule. As a member of Division I-AA, now Division I FCS, the Hilltoppers won a national title in 2002.
