About The West Virginia Mountaineers

WVU’s athletic teams are called the Mountaineers; they participate in the NCAA’s Division I and the Big East Conference. Their mascot is called the Mountaineer. The university’s 2 major sports are football, which is played at the Mountaineer Field, and basketball, which is played at the WVU Coliseum. The football team is the most winning team to never win a national championship, in front of Miami University and Virginia Tech. From 1937-38, WVU was classified in the College Division; from 1939-72, they were in the University Division; from 1973-77, they were Division I and they’ve been Division IA since 1978. From 1891-1990, the school has primarily been an Independent; they’ve had sporadic stints in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference from 1925-27, and the Southern Conference from 1950-67. After they were reclassified as a Division 1 Independent from 1973-77 and a Division 1A Independent from 1978-90, they currently compete in the Big East Conference; the school didn’t have a team in 1892 and 1918.

WVU has had only 2 undefeated regular seasons in 1988 and 93; in 1988, they went to the National Championship in the Fiesta Bowl to take on the University of Notre Dame. In 1993, they went to the Sugar Bowl to take on the University of Florida. WVU lost both games and both seasons, they were under coach Don Nehlen’s leadership. The football team has been Conference champions 13 times: 8 in the Southern Conference and 5 in the Big East Conference. The team has played in 25bowl games and their record is 12-15. They’ve been in major bowls like the Sugar Bowl 3 times, Peach Bowl 4 times, Fiesta Bowl twice and the Gator Bowl 6 times. In the 2007 season, the team started as the #3- ranked team, which is the highest preseason ranking in school history. That team was eventually ranked #1 in the Coaches Poll and ended the season with a third 11-win season after they won the Fiesta Bowl. The Mountaineers’ current head coach is Bill Stewart, the team’s 32nd head coach in the school’s history. The football team celebrates their latest bowl victory over the Oklahoma Sooners in the 2008 Fiesta Bowl.
