Weber State University is a public university in Ogden, UT, which is in Weber County. The university was established by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1889 as the Weber Stake Academy. The school, like Weber County and the Weber River, was named after John Henry Weber, who was an early fur trader. The school saw several name changes in the early 20th century: Weber Academy, Weber Normal College and Weber College in 1933 after the LDS Church passed the institution over to the State of Utah. In 1962, the name changed again to Weber State College and, finally, on January 1, 1991, the school got university status and became Weber State University.

About The Weber State Wildcats
Weber State University’s athletic teams are called the Wildcats, their colors are purple and white and they participate in the NCAA’s Division I; football competes in the NCAA’s Football Championship Subdivision in the Big Sky Conference. The football team’s home games are played at the Elizabeth Dee Shaw Stewart Stadium. Once the University of Idaho and Boise State University joined the Western Athletic Conference, their main rival in the Big Sky Conference became Idaho State University. Their mascot is Waldo the Wildcat. The football team’s leadership changed with the addition of their new head coach Ron McBride; he is the University of Utah’s former head coach and started coaching for the Wildcats in 2005. Coach “Mac” went 6-5 overall and 4-3 in conference play in his first year with the team.
The Wildcats start the 2008 season on August 28 when they play Montana-Western. On September 6, the team travels to Honolulu, HI to play Hawai’i. Their Homecoming game will be played on September 13 against Dixie State. The following week, they travel to Sacramento, CA to play Sacramento State on September 20. On September 27, they travel to Salt Lake City, UT to play Utah. They return home to play Montana on October 4. On October 11, they travel to Bozeman, MT to play Montana State. They play Northern Colorado on October 18 at home. The next week, they travel to Flagstaff, AZ to play Northern Arizona on October 25. They play Portland State at home on November 1. Then they travel to Pocatello, ID where they take on Idaho State on November 8. They return home to play Eastern Washington on November 22.
