Virginia Tech Hokies

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, also better known as Virginia Tech, is a public land-grant polytechnic university located in Blacksburg, VA. It was founded as a military college and is one of the few public universities in the US that continues to keep a corps of cadets in a full-time military training program. Virginia Tech’s campus is located in the New River Valley in the Valley and Ridge region of the Appalachian Mountains in southwestern Virginia and is just a few miles from the Jefferson National Forest in Montgomery County. In April 2007, the school made international headlines due to a mass shooting by a student on April 16. >> More alt

About The Virginia Tech Hokies

Virginia Tech’s athletic teams are the Hokies; their football team plays their home games in Lane Stadium and play in the NCAA’s Division I-A. Because the stadium is relatively small compared to a lot of other Division I-A stadiums, it’s still thought to be one of the loudest stadiums in the US. It was recognized in 2005 by rivals.com as having the best home field advantage in college football. The stadium has a long history of traditions that encourage participation by fans, the corps of cadets and bands. Since the stadium was expanded in 2004, it was built in such a way that it naturally maintains sound so that the crowd noise is intensified. The football team’s current head coach is Frank Beamer, who has become one of the most winning head coaches in Division I-A football with 198 wins after the 2006 season. His teams are recognized for rock-solid special teams play, which is warmly called Beamer Ball, and for the hard-hitting defenses led by defensive coordinator Bud Foster. The team currently has the 4th longest bowl streak in the US; they participated in bowl games all each of the last 15 seasons. The Hokies annually play their traditional rival, the University of Virginia, for the Commonwealth Cup.

The Hokies start off the 2008 season on August 30, where they travel to Charlotte, NC to play East Carolina at the Bank of America Stadium. On September 6, they play Furman at Lane Stadium; as well as Georgia Tech on September 13. Next, they travel to Chapel Hill, NC to play North Carolina on September 20. The following week, they travel to Lincoln, NE where they play Nebraska on September 27. Their Homecoming game will be against Western Kentucky on October 4. Two weeks after that, they travel to Chestnut Hill, MA where they play Boston College on October 18. They then travel to Tallahassee, FL to play Florida State on October 25. They play Maryland at home on November 6; this game will be broadcast on ESPN. Then they travel to Miami Gardens, FL to play Miami on November 13; this game will be broadcast on ESPN. They play Duke on November 22 at home; as well as Virginia on November 29. The ACC Championship game will be held on December 6 in Tampa, FL, where the winners of the Atlantic and Coastal Divisions will play each other.
