There are some college football teams that play in stadiums that put the fans so close to the action, they feel like they can reach out and touch the players. There are others that are ultra-modern and include the latest in facilities like luxurious suites and spacious locker rooms. Rentshcler Field, the home of the UConn Huskies, is both; it’s the newest, most modern college football stadium in the country. Located in East Hartford, Rentschler Field opened on August 30, 2003, as the Huskies beat Big Ten Conference member Indiana. In 2004, the Huskies won 6 home games and set a UConn single-season record. Also that year, UConn sold 24,000 season tickets for Rentschler Field and ended the season ranked 26th in the nation (and first in the Big East) in attendance. In 2005, the Huskies played before sellout crowds in all six of their home games; the Syracuse game was televised live nationally by ESPN and the South Florida game was UConn’s first ABC Television appearance. Rentschler Field is the end result of amazing teamwork and dedication between the state’s Office of Police and Management, the town of East Hartford, United Technologies Corporation and help from several public and private sector organizations. Because of this cooperation, the people of Connecticut get the opportunity to see college football at its highest level in a world-class facility.
Freshman tailback Donald Brown and senior defensive tackle Rhena Fuller were both named second team All-BIG EAST. Brown was the only freshman chosen to be on the first 2 BIG EAST All-Star teams. Fuller was named a Draddy Trophy finalist and was UConn’s first-ever recipient of the National Football Foundation’s National Scholar-Athlete Award. UConn’s 2006-07 schedule was so challenging it was rated the 6th-toughest in the country by the NCAA. The Huskies played before 4 sellout crowds at Rentschler Field. The Dallas Cowboys picked senior Deon Anderson in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft. The Huskies made it to the Meineke Car Care Bowl in December 2007 and got national TV exposure. The UConn football game against Temple at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Saturday, September 6, 2008 will be televised on ESPNU. UConn will take on Baylor at Rentschler Field on Friday, September 19 on ESPN2; a week later on Friday, September 26, they’ll travel to take on Louisville at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium, which will also be broadcast on ESPN2.
