Temple’s sports teams are called the Owls; the name comes from the university’s early days when it was a night school. The Owls are mainly members of the Atlantic Ten Conference, with the exception of football, which is moving into the Mid-American Conference from being a I-A Independent. The football team plays in the NCAA’s Division I-A; due to the fact that the Atlantic Ten supported football at the Division I-AA level only, they must keep a separate league affiliation for football. The team was a member of the Big East Conference until they were expelled after the 2004 season because of a variety of program shortcomings. In 2005 and 2006, they played a limited Mid-American Conference schedule before they became a fully affiliated football-only member and playing a full MAC 8-game league schedule in 2007. They play their home games at Lincoln Financial Field. Defensive coordinator for the University of Virginia, Al Golden, replaced Bobby Wallace as Temple’s new head coach in 2005.
The 2008 Temple football schedule features 5 home games as part of the Owls’ 2nd season of Mid-American Conference play and 4 nationally televised games. They will open the season with a game at Army on Friday, August 29 before a national TV audience on ESPNU or ESPN Classic. The Owls will host Connecticut in their home opener on September 6 at Lincoln Financial Field. They will then go on the road for 2 games; they will open their second season of MAC play at Buffalo on September 13 and then take on their interstate rival Penn State on September 20. On September 27, they play their MAC foe Western Michigan in the conference home opener and continue on the road to Miami, OH on October 4 and Central Michigan on October 11. They will host Ohio on October 21 before a national audience on ESPN2. The game has also been chosen as Breast Cancer Awareness Day with portions of the ticket proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Philadelphia Affiliate. Then the team will travel to Annapolis, MD for a nationally televised game against Navy on November 1 for it last non-conference game. The game will be televised live by CBS College Sports Network. Then the team moves on to Kent State on Wednesday, November 12 for another nationally televised game on ESPN2 or ESPN 360. They end the regular season with 2 home games against Eastern Michigan on November 22 and Akron on November 28.
