The Thunderbirds are Southern Utah’s sports teams that compete in the NCAA’s Division I and the Summit League. Their football team plays in the Football Championship Subdivision’s Great West Football Conference. Their colors are red and white and their mascot is the thunderbird, a mythical creature that’s thought to be “supernatural” in power and strength. The Thunderbirds’ football team’s home games are played at Eccles Coliseum. The stadium is named after the late George S. and Dolores Eccles; their foundation made an important contribution to its reconstruction. The stadium’s seating capacity is 8,500, which includes sky-box suites and 1,000 chair-back reserved seats. In addition to the football facilities, the Coliseum also has a newly refurbished and resurfaced track and field facility that was completed in summer 2007.
The football team will start the 2008 season on September 1 against Montana in Missoula, MT. They return home to play North Dakota on September 8, Southern Illinois on September 15 and McNeese State on September 22. Then they travel to Bozeman, MT where they’ll face Montana State on October 6. After that, they travel to Youngstown, OH where they take on Youngstown State.
