The school’s athletic teams are called the Jackrabbits and they compete in the NCAA’s Division I. Their mascot is the jackrabbit; their homecoming celebration, called Hobo Day, is said to be “the biggest one-day event in the Dakotas.” The school’s marching band, “The Pride of the Dakotas,” was given the special name of the Millennium Band in 2000 by the state’s legislature. SDSU started a transition to Division I in 2004, which ended their long association with Division II North Central Conference. They didn’t agree to an adequate scheduling agreement and ended their 100-year-old rivalry with State. They’re currently a member of The Summit League, the Gateway Football Conference, the Western Wrestling Conference and Varsity Equestrian.

The South Dakota State Jackrabbits’ football team is a Division I Championship Subdivision team that plays in the Coughlin-Alumni Stadium. Their head coach is currently John Steigelmeier. The Coughlin–Alumni Stadium has a 16,000-seat capacity; it opened in 1962 and replaced State Field as the team’s home stadium. It’s named after Charles Coughlin, who donated money to go toward the stadium’s construction. The Dakota Marker is a trophy that is given to the winning team of the annual college football game between the Jackrabbits and the North Dakota State University Bison. It’s a replica of one of several stone boundary markers found along the border between South Dakota and North Dakota.
