The San Jose State Spartans football team competes in the NCAA Division I Bowl Subdivision. The first football team in the San Jose State University was founded in the year 1893. They started to play regular football seasons in the year 1898. Prior to WAC, they were a part of the Northern California Athletic Conference, the California Collegiate Athletic Association and the Big West Conference. The Spartans have won a total of 16 conference titles, the first being the Northern California Athletic Conference co-championship in the year 1932. They set the NCAA Division I record with the total points and total touchdowns for a non-overtime game, when they defeated the Rice Owls with a margin of 70-63 in that game in the year 2004. Dick Tomey is the current head coach of the San Jose State Spartans football team. He had joined the team in the year 2005.
The Spartan Stadium is home to the Spartans (football). It was inaugurated in the year 1933 and it happened to be the home of the San Jose Earthquakes of the North American Soccer League from the years 1974 to 1984 and the San Jose CyberRays of the Women's United Soccer Association from the years 2001 to 2003. Presently, along with the Spartans, the stadium has also been the site for the Major League Lacrosse team and the San Francisco Dragons. It can seat up to 30,578 spectators.
