The Aztecs compete in the NCAA Division I (I-A for football) and belong to the Mountain West Conference. The San Diego State campus is often referred to as "Montezuma Mesa," as the university is situated on a mesa overlooking Mission Valley and is located at the intersection of Montezuma Road and College Avenue in the city of San Diego, California.
The football team of the San Diego State University is part of the highest level of American collegiate football, NCAA "Football Bowl Subdivision" of Division 1 (which was formerly known as Division 1 A).
The present head coach of the football team is Chuck Long. He played as a quarterback in college at the University of Iowa and also professionally with the Detroit Lions and the Los Angeles Rams. He is also an inductee of the College Football Hall of Fame.
