Sacramento State Hornets

California State, Sacramento, which is also called Sacramento State or Sac State, is a public university in the city of Sacramento, CA. It is a part of the California State University system. In 2007, the US News and World Report ranked Sacramento State as the 57th-best Masters-level university in the world. The hard work of getting a four-year university in Sacramento dates to the 1920s, but Bay Area politics kept it from occurring until 1947. The University’s colors green and gold signify the green of the foothills and trees and gold for discovery. The school was established as Sacramento State College in 1947 in a time of strong demand for higher education after WWII. When it was founded, Sac State shared its space with Sacramento Junior College. It moved to its permanent location by 1953; it’s located on the banks of the American River. >> More alt

About The Sacramento State Hornets

Sacramento State’s sports teams participate in NCAA Division I and for football, NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, in the Big Sky Conference. Sacramento State is the only California school in the Big Sky Conference; the other teams are from Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah and Washington. The football and track and field teams compete in Hornet Stadium. The stadium was finished in 1969 and is the Hornets’ home football stadium. It was also home to the Sacramento Surge of the WLAF and the Sacramento Gold Miners of the Canadian Football League. On July 7, 1993, the stadium was the site of the first Canadian Football League game ever played on American soil. In the game, the Calgary Stampeders beat the Gold Miners. The biggest crowd the stadium ever saw was when the Sacramento Surge beat the Barcelona Dragons in the World League playoffs before 26,445 fans on May 30, 1992. Hornet Stadium underwent a $1 million improvement to prepare for the US Track and Field Olympic Trials in July 2000. Some recent additions to the stadium include a new fully functional score board for both football and track and field and a new public entrance.

On August 24, 2006, ground was broken for the Broad Athletic Center, the new field house at the stadium for both teams. The biggest Sacramento State crowd the stadium saw was on September 18, 1999, where the Hornets beat their arch-rivals UC Davis in the Causeway Classic before 20,993 spectators. The university has a rivalry with the University of California, Davis in all sports. The football game between the 2 schools is called the Causeway Classic and is played for the Causeway Carriage; this refers to the fact that the schools are connected by the Yolo Causeway bridge over Yolo Bypass floodway. Most recently, the rivalry expanded to include the Causeway Cup, which includes every sport the teams play in. The Sacramento State Marching Band is also known as The Spirit of Sacramento and has operated at the school since 1958. They perform at every home football game and at a few select road games. The band’s motto is “Without us, it’s just a game!” which was adopted in 1996. The current band director is Dr. Timothy Smith, who is also the Associate Director of Bands.
