Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey (a.k.a. Rutgers University), is the biggest institution for higher learning in New Jersey. It was originally founded as Queen’s College in 1766 and is the 8th-oldest college in the US. It was originally a private university affiliated with the Dutch Reformed Church and admitted only male students. It is now a nonsectarian, coeducational public research university that makes no religious demands of its students. Rutgers is one of just 2 colonial colleges that later became public universities; the other is the College of William and Mary. Rutgers’ campuses are located in New Brunswick, Piscataway, Newark and Camden. >> More alt

About The Rutgers Scarlet Knights

The Scarlet Knights are Rutgers’ athletic teams. In sports, Rutgers is mainly known for being the “Birthplace of College Football.” They hosted the first intercollegiate football game ever on November 6, 1869; Rutgers beat a team from the College of New Jersey, which is now Princeton University. Rutgers is among the first American schools to participate in intercollegiate athletics. The main campus in New Brunswick-Piscataway is currently home to 27 teams in the Big East Conference, which participate in Division 1-A competition as authorized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association in these sports: baseball, basketball, crew, cross country, fencing, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, swimming and diving, wrestling and volleyball. In spite of being the “Birthplace of College Football” and sharing the 1869 national championship with Princeton, Rutgers hasn’t been overly successful through the years.

In the last 30 years, Rutgers was considered one of the worst Division 1-A teams, posting numerous consecutive losing seasons and raising discussion of possibly lowering the team to Division 1-AA competition. For most of its existence, the football team wasn’t associated with any formal football conference and stayed independent when the first football leagues were forming. Currently, Rutgers plays in Division 1-A and is a member of the Big East Conference. The current football coach is Greg Schiano. One hundred twenty five years after Rutgers and Princeton inaugurated the tradition of American football, Rutgers Stadium, was opened in the 1994 season and is the current home to the football team. Rutgers’ rivals are Princeton University and Columbia University, which was formerly King’s College. These historic rivalries started during the early days of college football. While the rivalry is maintained in other sports, neither team has met in football since 1980.
