The roots of its origin can be traced back to 1975 when the board of directors of the Shreveport-Bossier City Sports Foundation came up with the idea of bringing a post-season football game to northwest Louisiana. Applying to the National Collegiate Athletic Association for certification, the group’s efforts were rewarded with the approval of a December 13, 1976 game. Since its formation till five years, the bowl game highlighted the championship of the Southland Conference. However, a Division I conference held before the NCAA split the division into Division I-A and Division I-AA. This division was not appreciated at that time. From then onwards, it began to invite two at-large teams. It continued till 1995 when it began to feature a Southeastern Conference school versus an at-large opponent team.
From 1998 onwards, the Independence Bowl has begun to organize a match up between teams representing the Big 12 Conference and the SEC. Teams from other conferences also get the chance to play. But they are allowed only when if one of those top leagues does not have bowl-eligible teams to send. This has happened in the 2004 game when Miami played for the first time in place of a SEC squad. It is even one of the earliest college bowl games to use a title sponsor. In 1990 Poulan Weed-Eater, then a division of AB Electrolux Home Products became the first sponsor of the Independence Bowl. This company sponsored the Bowl game until 1996. Due to the sponsorship, the game was also referred to as the “Weedwacker Bowl" at times. From 1998 until 2008, the sponsorship was taken over by Newell Rubbermaid's Sanford, a well-known brand of writing products. MainStay Investments sponsored the Independence Bowl from 2001 to 2003.
In its successful and memorable thirty years of existence, the Independence Bowl embarked upon a new era in the game's history in 2006. The stable three-year sponsorship search ended on August 21, 2006. Now PetroSun Inc., a Phoenix, sponsors it that is an Arizona-based Company. This company provides services and products to different suppliers of oil and gas in and around Phoenix. On December 28, 2007, football lovers can enjoy an interesting game.
