The school was established on February 22, 1855 as the Farmers’ High School of Pennsylvania by an act of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. About The Penn State Nittany Lions

Penn State’s athletic teams are called the Nittany Lions. The school’s mascot is the Nittany Lion; and their official colors were black and pink originally, but when the baseball team’s uniforms faded to dark blue and white, Penn State changed its colors to the current blue and white permanently. The school competes in the NCAA’s Division I-A and the Big Ten Conference in almost all sports. Since Penn State joined the Big Ten Conference in 1991, its teams have won 44 regular season conference titles and 10 tournament titles. The University finished in the top 25 in the NACDA Director’s Cup every year since the start of the ranking 13 years ago; this means the school has one of the most successful athletic programs in the US.

Even though the overall athletic program is quite successful, Penn State is most known for its football team. The team’s home games are played in Beaver Stadium; it has the 2nd largest seating capacity of any US stadium after Michigan Stadium. The team’s head coach is well-known coach Joe Paterno, who was 81 years old and in his 42nd year as head coach as of 2007. Paterno is constantly in a race with Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden for the most wins ever in the Division I-A, which is now called the Football Bowl Subdivision, history. Recently inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, Paterno is currently the most winning coach in FBS history. Penn State opened the new Penn State All-Sports Museum inside Beaver Stadium in February 2002. The school competes in 2 football trophy games with other Big Ten schools: they compete for the Governor’s Victory Bell against the University of Minnesota and the end-of-the-season Land Grant Trophy game against Michigan State University.
