2009 will mark the 32nd annual playing of the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl, and San Diego has got the game to see! Not only does this tradition-laden event feature two of the best teams in college football, but it is played in the warm and sunny city of San Diego, California. This year’s game will match the #22 University of Arizona Wildcats against the #20 University of Nebraska Cornhuskers in an interesting matchup, and rematch of the 1998 Holiday Bowl, which saw the Wildcats rally back to beat the Cornhuskers in a hard-fought 23-20 battle.

Arizona (8-4) was invited to the Holiday Bowl just one day following their season-ending 21-17 victory over #20 USC. The win also provided the Wildcats with a share of 2nd place in the Pac-10 conference. On the other side of the field, after having won the Big-12’s North Division with a 6-2 record, the Cornhuskers (9-4) dropped a 13-12 heartbreaker to Texas in the conference championship game.
Arizona will no doubt be flying high after defeating USC for the first time in seven tries, while Nebraska may very well be asking themselves what might have been, after dropping such a close one to the Longhorns in the final seconds of that Big-12 championship match.
Coach Mike Stoops and his Wildcat players are ecstatic at receiving the bid. Arizona, who lost in overtime to eventual Pac-10 champion Oregon at home on November 21, regained their composure to beat both Arizona State and USC on the road. Now, all the Wildcats need to do is figure out how to block Nebraska’s Heisman Trophy finalist, defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, and things will continue to look up for them.
In the 2008 Holiday Bowl, it was Oregon earning a 42-31 victory over Oklahoma State, and allowing the Ducks to join other past Holiday champions like the Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma Sooners, and California Golden Bears. While there have been many, perhaps the best Holiday Bowl game ever took place in 1984, when the Cougars of Brigham Young University beat the Michigan Wolverines en route to the national championship for BYU.
California has much to offer those attending this game, so make sure to take advantage of everything that San Diego has to offer, in addition to the traditional bowl pageantry sure to surround the game.
