About The Norfolk State Spartans

The Spartans are NSU’s sports teams that compete in the NCAA’s Division I and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference; the football team competes in the Football Championship Subdivision. From 1953-60, the school was part of the Eastern Intercollegiate Conference and from 1962-96, it was part of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The Norfolk State University Athletics Foundation was established on July 29, 1980; it supplements the athletics program’s budget with fundraising activities. The Foundation also helps in these areas: scholarships, maintaining the facilities and buying equipment.

The Spartans’ football team plays its home games in the William “Dick” Price Stadium; it was named after the former NSU athletic director and head football and track coach Dick Price. The stadium was built in 1997 and has a capacity of 30,000 seats. It’s known as one of the biggest sports and entertainment venues in Hampton Roads. In terms of capacity, it’s one of the 10 biggest Division I FCS football stadiums. It found on the southeast end of the school’s campus and is made of brick, has a natural grass surface, an all-weather, 8-lane rubberized track, a 2-story press box and concession stands throughout the ground level. The very first game played in the stadium was when NSU played against Virginia State in the annual Labor Day Classic; the game brought in a record 34,000 fans.
