From 2002 to 2004 the official title of the game was Wyndham New Orleans Bowl, as it was sponsored by the reputed Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. The current sponsor for the game is R&L Carriers renaming the game as R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. With such well-known names associated with it, the game has gained the desired recognition along with appreciation from all the football fans. The teams pitted by the game are usually from the Conference USA playing against the champions of the Sun Belt Conference. Also it is regarded as the only guaranteed bowl bid of Sun Belt.

The 2005 game had to be organized on December 20, at the Cajun Field on the campus of University of Louisiana at Lafayette. This move of the game occurred because the Louisiana Superdome that hosted the bowl game was damaged, due to the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina. This game was renamed and called as the New Orleans Bowl at Lafayette. Soon after the reconstruction of the Superdome the bowl game returned and was played on December 22, 2006. The game was then sponsored by a freight company R&L Carriers, with which it was again renamed as the R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.

For the year 2007, the matchup will be featuring the Memphis Tigers who will stand in opposition to the Florida Atlantic University Owls.
