Michigan’s athletic teams are the Wolverines and they play in the NCAA’s Division I and the football team plays in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The teams also play in the Big Ten Conference, with the exception of hockey. They started competing in intercollegiate football in 1879. The football program is said to have popularized the game at the college level west of the Appalachians. Michigan’s football team is ranked first in NCAA history in total wins with 860 and winning percentage with .745. They won their first Rose Bowl game in 1902; currently, they have the longest streak of back-to-back bowl game appearances. 1974 was the last year the team didn’t appear in a bowl game; that was also the last season that Big Ten teams other than the champion were not eligible for bowl games. Their last losing season was 1967; they’ve won 42 Big Ten championships including 5 in the last ten years. They have 11 national championships, the most recent in 1997.
They produced 3 Heisman Trophy winners: Tom Harmon, Desmond Howard and Charles Woodson. The football team plays their home games in Michigan Stadium, the largest college football-only stadium in the world. The stadium’s official capacity is over 107, 501 with the extra seat being “reserved” for Fritz Crisler. The attendance there usually exceeds the official capacity, though. This NCAA record-breaking attendance has become normal for the stadium, particularly since the arrival of their head coach Bo Schembechler. Michigan has strong rivalries with quite a few teams; among them are Michigan State University, University of Notre Dame and Ohio State University. The rivalry with Ohio State has been referred to as the greatest rivalry in American sports by ESPN, along with the Notre Dame-USC and Army-Navy rivalries. The school has all-time winning records against all 3 schools.
