The James Madison University Dukes are the athletics teams of James Madison University, and their name "Dukes" is derived from Samuel Page Duke, the university's second president. They participate in the Colonial Athletic Association, which is in Division I, and in football they participate in the Football Championship Subdivision of Division I, which is formerly known as Division I-AA.

About The James Madison Dukes
Their mascot is Duke Dog, and is frequently seen at events. JMU has won two national championships, tied for third most in Virginia. The football team was founded in 1972, and plays thair games at Bridgeforth Stadium. The stadium was originally called JMU Stadium, but was renamed for William E. Bridgeforth in 1990. Until the hiring of Mickey Matthews in 1999, the JMU football team was rarely the centerpiece of JMU sports, but later has gained recognition as one of the top programs in FCS football.
They made the NCAA playoffs in his first year with the team and in 2004, and won the I-AA national championship behind the great play of quarterback Justin Rascati. The team has a 214-167-3 all-time record. Some notable Dukes who went on to the NFL are Charles Haley, Scott Norwood and Gary Clark. Recently, the Virginia Department of Planning and Budget has approved a $10 million budget to "renovate and expand Bridgeforth Stadium".
