The athletic teams of the Indiana University make up the Indiana Hoosiers. The Hoosiers are a member of the Big Ten Conference and compete in the NCAA Division I Tournament. In its history with the NCAA, the Hoosiers have won 24 NCAA titles and 1 AIAW (Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) title. The Indiana Hoosiers football team competes in NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision and the Big Ten Conference. The Indiana Hoosiers have made bowl game appearances in 1967, 1979, 1986, 1987, 1990, 1991, 1993 and 2007. Till today the most successful coaches that have led the Indiana Hoosiers have been Bill Mallory and Bo McMillin.

The Memorial Stadium serves as the home arena for the Indiana Hoosiers football team. It has a capacity of 50,180 people and is located in Bloomington, Indiana. The Memorial Stadium was built in the year 1960 and has undergone a series of renovation projects ever since. In 1986, the Memorial Stadium got aluminum seats along with the installation of sound and lighting systems. The same year, a new Astro Turf was laid in the stadium.
The stadium's press box and the Hoosier locker rooms got renovated in the year 2003 at a cost of $3.5 million and $250,000 respectively.
