The Redbirds are ISU’s sports teams that are members of the NCAA’s Division I and most teams are members of the Missouri Valley Conference, except football, which is part of the Gateway Football Conference. Their nickname “Redbirds” refers to the Illinois state bird, the cardinal. Their mascot is Reggie Redbird and their fight song is “Go, You Redbirds.” ISU’s sports program began over a century ago and they started winning right away. ISU was an NCAA Division I competitor for over a decade; they began conference play in 1981-82 school year. The teams have won 125 league titles in 23 years.
The Redbirds’ football team plays their home games at Hancock Stadium and has since 1963. They won conference titles in 1998, 99 and 2006. The team won 2 playoff games and made it to the Final Four and was ranked 3rd in the AP poll in 1999. Hancock Stadium’s capacity is 15,000; it opened in 1963 and was named for former ISU athletic director Dr. Howard Hancock. It became the state’s first college stadium with artificial turf in 1969; the turf was replaced and a new scoreboard installed. The stadium was home to the Illinois High School football championships for a long time. The stadium is home to the Big Red Marching Machine, which was one of the country’s largest marching bands once; it still gets national attention. The stadium is also home to the Minor League Football Association’s Twin City Storm.
