Idaho State University, or ISU, is a public university, which is operated by the State of Idaho; the main campus is located is Pocatello and there are outreach programs in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho Falls, Boise and Twin Falls. Governor Frank W. hunt signed Senate Bill 53, which established the Academy of Idaho on March 11, 1901; this was dependent on private land donations being made for the site. It was renamed the Idaho Technical Institute in 1915; WWI ending brought a flood of students and enrollment rose to over 1,000. The school was renamed the University of Idaho-Southern Branch in 1927; in 1947, it was renamed Idaho State College and became a 4-year school for the very first time. The school was given its current name in 1963 to reflect its new status as a four-year public university.

The ISU Bengals compete in the NCAA Division I Big Sky Conference and in the Football Championship Subdivision for football. In 1981, the school won the NCAA Division I-AA national championship in football. The football team plays their home games at the Holt Arena; until 1988, it was called the Minidome. The Holt Arena is the oldest enclosed stadium on a college campus in the US. Dan Zeidman was Idaho State’s punter, part-time placekicker and full-time kickoff man; he was signed by the NFL’s Carolina Panthers in the 2008 NFL Draft. Zeidman is the 5th former Bengal to play in the NFL; he joins Jared Allen of the Minnesota Vikings, Jeff Charleston of the Indianapolis Colts, Matt Gutierrez of the New England Patriots and Pago Togafau of the Philadelphia Eagles. Former receiver Clyde Logan was also signed to a free agent contract in the NFL Draft; he signed with the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Bengals’ rivals are the Boise State Broncos and the University of Idaho Vandals. These rivalries have significantly diminished after Boise State and University of Idaho left the Big Sky Conference in 1996, though; they moved up to Division I-A. Their current main rivals are the Weber State Wildcats of Ogden, UT. The football team will open the 2008 season on August 30 against Boise State in Boise, ID. On September 6, they’ll travel to Moscow, ID to play the University of Idaho. Their home opener will be against North Dakota on September 18. They will then travel to Cheney, WA to play Eastern Washington State on September 27. Next, they’ll play the Hall of Fame Game at Holt Arena against Montana State on October 4. After that, they’ll travel to Greeley, CO where they’ll play Northern Colorado on October 11. Their Homecoming game will be against Northern Arizona on October 18. The following week, they travel to Portland, OR to play Portland State on October 25. Next, they travel to San Luis Obispo, CA to play Cal Poly on November 1. They will play Weber State next at Holt Arena on November 8. Then they’ll travel to Missoula, MT where they will face off with the University of Montana. Finally, they play Sacramento State at Holt Arena on November 22.
