Howard University, or HU, is a private, co-ed, nonsectarian university in Washington, DC. The school was established on March 2, 1867; it was named after the commissioner of the Freedom’s Bureau, General Oliver O. Howard, who was also the school’s 3rd president. Congress enacted a charter for the school and it was approved by Andrew Jackson.

About Howard Bison
The Bison are HU’s sports teams that compete in the NCAA’s Division I and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The football competes in the Football Championship Subdivision. Their colors are red, white and blue. The school put 70 student athletes in the 2008 MEAC Commissioner’s All-Academic team; this was the 1st time in 8 years the school had the highest number of representatives. The school also had the most female student athletes named to the team with 44. The football team posted highest overall with 14; soccer and track and field both had 4 each.
The Bison’s football team plays home games in William H. Greene Stadium. It’s a multipurpose stadium that can seat 10,000 and opened in 1986. The team will play Savannah State University on September 27 in the Miami Football Classic. The game will played at Traz Powell Stadium on Miami Dade College North’s campus. It will be a showcase for the 2 HBCU teams, but will also benefit the Police Athletic League in that area. The Bison will have 11 players from the area on the roster: Mario Alexander, Martin Decembert, John Mendoza, Terry Perry, Oscar Gonzales, Alfred Sutton, Theodore Grahan, Terrell Killings, Brandon Drayton, Richard Nelson and Taji Thornton. The game will be shown on ION media networks and there will be a tape delay on September 28. The football game won’t be the only thing going on there, though; there will also be a battle of the bands, Greek step show, parade, an old-school tailgate party and an post-game party.
