Hampton University, which was formerly Hampton Institute and originally Hampton Normal and Industrial Institute, is a historically black university in Hampton, VA; it’s still predominantly black. The campus overlooks the northern edge of the Hampton Roads harbor and was established on the grounds of what was called Little Scotland, which was a plantation in Elizabeth City County not far from Fort Monroe and the Grand Contraband Camp, which were symbols of freedom for former slaves after the end of the American Civil War.

The Pirates are Hampton University’s sports teams that compete in the NCAA’s Division I and joined the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in 1995. Since it joined the conference, the school has won numerous MEAC titles in football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s track and men’s and women’s tennis. The men’s basketball team made NCAA tournament history by becoming the 4th 15th-seeded team to beat a 2nd-seeded team in March 2001. They beat Iowa State in March 15, but were defeated by Georgetown 2 days later. The win made SportsCenter’s Top 10 NCAA tournament upsets, though. The school’s rivals include Norfolk State University and Howard University.
The school’s football team plays home games in Armstrong Stadium. It’s the home of the football and men’s and women’s track teams. The team will start out the 2008 season on August 31 in the MEAC-SWAC Challenge in Orlando, FL against Jackson State. Then they go to Carbondale, IL to play Southern Illinois on September 6. Then they come home to play Howard on September 13 and North Carolina A&T on September 20. The following week, they travel to Dover, DE to play Delaware State on October 4. They return home to play Norfolk State in the Battle of the Bay on October 18. They travel to Orangeburg, SC the next week to play South Carolina State on October 25. Their Homecoming game is on November 1 against Winston-Salem State. They stay home to play Bethune-Cookman on November 8. The following week, they travel to Tallahassee, FL to play Florida A&M on November 15. The next week, they travel to Baltimore, MD to play Morgan State on November 22.
