Georgetown University is a private Jesuit institution founded in the year 1789. Located in Georgetown, Washington, D.C., the university is one of the earliest Roman Catholic universities in the United States of America. The University Athletics teams are also known as the Georgetown Hoyas and they represent Georgetown University in college sports. It fields more than 25 varsity teams and competes in the NCAA Division I Big East Conference. “Jack the Bulldog” is the official mascot of the Georgetown Hoyas. The University had live dogs as earlier mascots and amongst them was a famed terrier named Stubby. Mention may be made of the Georgetown's fight song, which is unique amongst all other U.S. universities fight songs for its candid mentioning of other colleges by name.
Kevin Kelly was appointed as the head football coach in January 2006. The football team is a participant in the Division I-AA Patriot League. The University has a rich legacy of football history that includes the formation of the Georgetown University Football Association on the 1st of November 1874.
