In NCAA Division I basketball competition, the University of Florida is represented by the Florida Gators Men's Basketball Team. Billy Donovan has been leading the side as the Head Coach since the 1996-97 season. The Florida Gators is the first team since the 1991-92 season to win the 2006 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament and 2007 the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament back-to-back and that too with exactly the same line up in both the seasons.
While looking for a vibrant and proven athletics coach, Jeremy Foley came across Billy Donovan, who was then picked up from Marshall University in 1996 and brought in as a replacement for Lon Kruger who had been the Florida Gators' head coach till 1996. Since Donovan took charge of coaching duties, the Gators have managed to make it to the NCAA Tournament every year, a nine-year straight run that in itself is a school record and is also considered as the sixth longest NCAA Tournament streak in the United States. In the 1999-2000 season, the Florida Gators had the glory of defeating the team from Illinois that is one of the brightest names in NCAA. At that time, Gators’ former coach Lon Kruger was coaching the Illinois team. The Florida Gators’ also defeated Duke (Duke Blue Devils) and North Carolina (North Carolina Tar Heels). These wins took the Florida Gators to the National Championship Game, where they faced and lost to the highly favored Michigan State (Michigan State Spartans)
