Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, a.k.a. Florida A & M or FAMU, is a historically black university in Tallahassee, FL. The school was established on October 3, 1887 as the State Normal College for Colored Students; four years later, it became a land-grant university when it received money under the Second Morrill Act. Most recently, the school has become the #1 college for African Americans in the nation according to Black Enterprise Magazine.

The Rattlers are Florida A&M’s sports teams that compete in the NCAA’s Division I and in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference; the football team competes in the Football Championship Subdivision. The football team was a powerhouse in the mid-20th century. They won the Black College National Championship 8 times from 1938 to 1961, which included winning 6 times under the leadership of coach Jake Gaither in 1950, 52, 54, 57, 59 and 61. After 25 years of coaching, Gaither retired and left the team with a 203-36-4 record; thirty six players from his teams were All-Americans and 42 went to the NFL. Gaither entered the College Football Hall of Fame in 1975. The Rattlers’ current football team plays home games in Bragg Memorial Stadium. It’s a multipurpose stadium that can seat 25,500 spectators that opened in 1982.
The team will have 2 Thursday night TV appearances on ESPNU; the 2 games will be the one against Delaware State on September 4 in Dover, DE and the one against Winston-Salem State on October 9 at Bragg Stadium. The team will start off the 2008 season on August 30 at home against Alabama State. The next week, they’ll travel to Dover to play Delaware State on September 4. Then they go to Washington, DC to play Howard University on September 20. The following week, they head to Atlanta, GA where they’ll play Tennessee State in the Bank of America Atlanta Football Classic on September 27. Then they go home to play South Carolina State on October 4 and Winston-Salem State on October 9. They go to Baton Rouge, LA the next week to play Southern on October 18. Then they go to Norfolk, VA where they play Norfolk State on October 25. Their Homecoming game will be played on November 1 against Morgan State. Then they travel to Greensboro, NC to play North Carolina A&T on November 8. They return home the following week to play Hampton University on November 15. The next week, they go to Orlando, FL to play Bethune-Cookman in the 29th Walt Disney World Florida Classic on November 22.
