Eastern Washington University, or EWU, is a public comprehensive state university; the main campus is in Cheney, WA and there’s a branch campus in Spokane. EWU was started by a $10,000 grant from industrialist Benjamin Pierce Cheney in 1882, and was originally called the Benjamin P. Cheney Academy in honor of its founder. The school was renamed State Normal School in 1889 and was renamed again in 1937 to Eastern Washington College of Education. After WWII, the campus grew rapidly and in 1961, it became Eastern Washington State College. In 1977, the name was changed once again, this time by the state legislature, to Eastern Washington University.

EWU’s mascot is an Eagle named Swoop and their colors are white and red. EWU’s athletic teams compete in the Big Sky Conference at the NCAA Division I level and the Playoff Division for football. The EWU football team plays their home games at Woodward Field, which was expanded and renovated in 2005. The field was named for one of the university’s head coaches. Quarterback Erik Meyer, who played for EWU from 2001 -2005, won the Walter Payton Award for the best player in Division I-AA football in 2005; he also set the I-AA career passing efficiency record at 166.5. Originally, EWU was an NAIA school until they joined the Big Sky Conference; the Eagles gained major standing in the NAIA and Division II. They won national and regional championships including a national championship in wrestling, which was dropped in the 80s. The NFL’s Seattle Seahawks have held most of their summer training camps at EWU (from 1976-1985 and since 1997) from late July to mid-August.
The Eagles will open the 2008 season playing Texas Tech in Lubbock, TX on August 30, 2008. They will then go to Boulder, CO and play Colorado University on September 6. Their home opener will be against Western Washington University on September 20. The following week, they will play Idaho State at home on September 27. Then they travel to Portland, OR to play Portland State on October 4. The following week they’ll play the University of Montana at home on October 11. They will then travel to Bozeman, MT to play Montana State. They play Sacramento State on November 1 at Woodward Field. After that, they travel to Greeley, CO where they’ll play Northern Colorado on November 8. Then they play Northern Arizona at Woodward Field on November 15. Finally, the Eagles play Weber State on November 22 in Ogden, UT. Their last 8 games are conference games starting with Idaho State and ending with Weber State.
