Delaware State University, a.k.a. DESU, is the 2nd-largest university in Delaware and is historically a black university. The main campus is in Dover, DE. The school was established as The State College for Colored Students on May 15, 1891 by the Delaware General Assembly.

The Hornets are Delaware State’s sports teams that compete in the NCAA’s Division I and in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The football team competes in the NCAA’s Football Championship Subdivision. The school has football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, track and field, tennis, wrestling, volleyball, soccer and bowling teams. The school’s men’s basketball team won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship in 2005 and got an invitation to the NCAA tournament. The women’s basketball team won the MEAC championship in 2006 and got an invitation to the NCAA tournament.
The Hornets’ football team plays their home games in Alumni Stadium. The multipurpose stadium, which opened in 1957, seats 6,828 spectators. The team won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship in 2007. They defeated Norfolk State in overtime, which gave them an automatic ticket to the playoffs. They were defeated by the University of Delaware, though. Neither school played the other in either school’s history. The team will open the 2008 season with a game against Florida A&M at home on September 6. Then they’ll travel to Kent, OH where they’ll take on Kent State on September 13. Then it’s back home to play against Central Connecticut State on September 27 and Hampton University on October 4. They go to Daytona Beach, FL to play Bethune-Cookman on October 11. They then play North Carolina A & T at home on October 18.They travel to Baltimore, MD the following week to play Morgan State on October 25. Then they come home to play South Carolina State on November 1 and Winston-Salem State on November 8. The next week, they go to Norfolk, VA to play Norfolk State on November 15 and Washington, DC to play Howard University on November 22.
