The well known financial services company Capital One has been sponsoring this bowl since 2001. At that time it was known as the Capital One Florida Citrus Bowl. The Florida Citrus Sports that is a non-profit group manages this bowl. This group also looks after the management of the Champs Sports Bowl and Florida Classic. This game that began to take place from 1947, is one of the oldest of the non-BCS bowls. It stands just next to the Cotton Bowl and Sun Bowl. As it is one of the premier bowls, it is traditionally held at 1 p.m. eastern saving time on 1st January. The game takes place every year, just prior to the Rose Bowl. Both the bowls are televised on ABC. Even during 2004, the Capital One Bowl placed its bid to become the fifth BCS game, but due to the bad condition of the stadium it was not selected. On July 26, 2007 the Orange County Commissioners announced the 1.1 billion dollars plan to build a new arena for the Orlando Magic, building a performing arts center and redeveloping the Citrus Bowl.
An estimated crowd of 9,000 witnessed the first game. Until 1968 the game featured matches between schools throughout the South. After gaining popularity as a major college bowl game, from 1968 till 1975, the bowl began to feature in the Mid-American Conference champion against an opponent from the Southern Conference. From 1987 to 1991, the Capital One Bowl featured the ACC Champion against a larger opponent. The 1998 game between Florida and Penn State holds the record of the largest amount of spectators at 72,940.
The Capital One Bowl also sponsors the annual "Mascot of the Year" contest. The last match was held between Wisconsin and Arkansas.
