At one point in time the Capital One Bowl was called the Citrus Bowl. It became such a force in the national college football conscious that a new field was built in Orlando and christened the Citrus Bowl. That time has passed and now a sponsorship deal has included the name of the game. The bowl game has remained a big part of the bowl season however, and now pits a team from the Big Ten against a team from the SEC in a battle of two football powerhouse conferences.

This year the Penn State Nitanny Lions and the LSU Tigers will play on January 1st at the venerable game. Penn State had national championship aspirations early in the season, but an early season loss to Iowa and a late season loss to Ohio State ended those chances. The team finished 10-2 overall and 6-2 in conference play. Third in the standings and Number 13 in the BCS standings, this team ran a balanced offense that ran for 174 yards and passed for 239 yards a game. The balanced offense that averaged 29.7 points a game is supported by a dominating defense that held teams to 11.8 points a game.
The LSU Tigers come in ranked Number 12 in the BCS and second in the West division of the SEC. The Tigers finished 9-3 overall and 5-3 in conference play. This is an LSU team that seemed to struggle offensively compared to Tiger teams in recent years. They averaged 130 yards on the ground and 180 through the air.
