First implemented for the 1998 season, the purpose of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) was to decisively provide a national champion for college football, while maintaining, and even enhancing, the nearly century-old college bowl system. As the BCS nears the end of its twelve years of existence, the Rose Bowl in Pasadena is proud and honored to host the most a pivotal game of the season.
The BCS is a series of five college football bowl games, and created with the intention of ending up with the #1 and #2 ranked teams in the country facing off to determine a true National Champion, while providing four other highly competitive bowl games between eight more of the highest ranked college football teams in the country. The five BCS games are the Fiesta Bowl, the Orange Bowl, the Rose Bowl, the Sugar Bowl, and the BCS National Championship Game.
Sponsored by Allstate, the 2008 BCS National Championship Game was and played at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, with the #2 LSU Tigers facing the #1 Ohio State Buckeyes. In addition to the distinction of being the first team with two losses to play in a BCS National Championship Game, LSU defeated Ohio State by a score of 38-24, which also made them the first team to have won two BCS National Championships.
The 2009 BCS Championship Game was sponsored by FedEx, played at Miami’s LandShark Stadium, and saw the top-ranked Oklahoma Sooners taking on the second-ranked Florida Gators. Florida’s defeat of Oklahoma by a score of 24-14 not only gave them the title of BCS National Champion, but also left them as only the second team to have won two BCS National Championships.
