Cardinals are the name given to the athletic teams of Ball State University. The history of the first Cardinal team dates back to the year 1926. The Ball State Cardinals football team competes in Division I Football Bowl Subdivision and the Mid-American Conference.

Brady Hoke is the current head coach of the football team. Before this he was an assistant coach at Michigan. As a player, Hoke was a member of the year 1978 team that won the Mid-American Conference. In the year 2007, Hoke made Ball State bowl eligible for the first time in eleven years and hence he was informally contacted for the Washington State head coaching position.
The team has achieved victories against Eastern Michigan, Navy, Buffalo, Western Michigan, Western Kentucky and Toledo. However on the other hand it has been beaten by Miami (Ohio), Nebraska, Central Michigan, Illinois and Indiana teams The most impressive victory of the season was against Buffalo where the score was 49-14 and the worst defeat was at the hands of the Central Michigan Chippewas, who routed the Cardinals with a score of 58-38.
Scheumann stadium, formerly known as Ball State Stadium, is the home field of the Ball State University. It is named after John B. and June M. Scheumann for their donations to the University. It opened in the year 1967 and has a seating capacity for 25,400 spectators. In the year 2007, certain improvements were made which included new lighting for night games, new concession stands, a facade update using bricks, a larger press box and private luxury suites.
