The Rockets is the name given to the athletic teams of the University of Toledo. All the sports teams of the University compete in the Mid-American Conference. The football team of the University did not have a nickname until the year 1923. A student of the University of Toledo gave his team a name, “Skyrockets”, which the sportswriters shortened to the "Rockets".

The Rockets football team has achieved tremendous success. The team won 35 consecutive games from the years 1969 to 1971. It is also credited with nine Mid-American Conference Championships, in the years-1969, 1970, 1971, 1981, 1984, 1990 (co-champs with Western Michigan), 1995, 2001 and 2004.
The Falcons of Bowling Green State University, Ohio are the chief rivals of the Toledo Rockets. BGSU is located in Bowling Green, Ohio, USA, just off Interstate 75 and only about 20 miles south of Toledo. Hence, this rivalry is known as "The Battle for I-75".
The Toledo Rockets will be playing a two-game series with the Buckeyes of The Ohio State University. The first game will be considered a "home" game for Toledo and will be played at the Cleveland Browns Stadium on September 19, 2009.
Glass Bowl, a stadium in Toledo, Ohio, is the home field of the University of Toledo. It was built in the year 1936 and was initially known as the University Stadium. Originally the bowl held 8,000 seats but after some renovations the capacity was increased to 18,500 seats.
