The Bulldogs belong to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and participate in the NCAA Division I (I-AA for college football). The school sponsors sports for men as well as women. The men's sports include basketball, bowling, tennis, track, golf, cross country and football and the women's sports are basketball, bowling, golf, soccer, volleyball, softball, cross country, track and tennis.
The football team of the University has won the maximum number of conference championships in the MEAC. It achieved victories in the years 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1994 and 2004. In the year 1975, it shared the title with North Carolina A&T; in the year 1976, it shared the title with Morgan State University; in the year 1982, it shared the title with Florida A&M and in the year 2004, it shared the title with Hampton University. The team has also won three Black College Football National Championship titles, with the most recent title won in the year 1994.
The Bulldogs met tremendous success in the year 1994, when legendary head coach Willie Jeffries led the team to a 10-2 record and also defeated Grambling State University.
The Oliver C. Dawson Stadium is the home field of the South Carolina State Bulldogs football team and women's soccer teams. It was inaugurated in the year 1955 and it has a seating capacity for 22,000 spectators.
