The Hornets are the intercollegiate athletic teams in the California State University, Sacramento. This public University was established in the year 1947. The Sac State (University is also known by this name) is a member of the Big Sky Conference. It sponsors male athletes in baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and indoor/outdoor track & field programs whereas the female athletes are sponsored in basketball, cross-country, golf, gymnastics, rowing, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor/outdoor track & field and volleyball. All the sports teams participate in the NCAA Division I level.

The University's football team participates in the NCAA Division I- Football Championship Subdivision. The football team plays an annual college football game called the Causeway Classic against the University of California, Davis (Aggies). The teams first played the game in the year 1954. The word “causeway” refers to the Yolo Causeway, which is a long bridge on Interstate 80 over the Yolo Bypass that connects Davis, California and Sacramento, California. The Causeway Carriage is awarded to the winning team. Some of the former notable players of the Sacramento State Hornets football team include Otis Amey, Mike Black, Marko Cavka, Aaron Garcia, John Gesek, Werner Hippler, Lorenzo Lynch and Lonie Paxton. Marshall Sperbeck is the current head coach of the University's football team. He had joined the Hornets on January 13, 2007.
The Sacramento State Hornets football team plays its home games at the Hornet Stadium. The arena was inaugurated in the year 1969. It was also the site for the Sacramento Surge of the WLAF and the Sacramento Gold Miners of the Canadian Football League. The facility can seat up to 21,195 spectators.
