The Owls began playing football in the year 1919 as a member of the Southwest Conference. They played at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium till the year 1950. Earlier the team was competitive against the larger public schools they played against, but with the passage of time, they started declining. But, in the year 2006, the football team played in the New Orleans Bowl, the first time the team had gone to a bowl game since the year 1961, ending the bowl drought in the University at that time.
The football team represents Rice University in NCAA Division I college football. The Owls have competed in Conference USA's Western Division since the year 2005.
The team now plays in the Western Division of Conference USA and is currently coached by David Bailiff.
There is an irony attached with the Rice Stadium. It opened in the year 1950 and had a capacity of around 70,000 seats. But after some improvements in the year 2006, the capacity of the stadium was reduced to 47,000 seats. Ironically, the seating at the new stadium has been reduced due to the Houston Oilers moving to Houston and Rice's lackluster play in the Southwest Conference during the 1960's.
