The intercollegiate athletic teams in the Northern Arizona University are known as the Lumberjacks. The University is a member of the Big Sky Conference and it sponsors the Lumberjacks in fifteen intercollegiate sports programs in the NCAA Division I. This public University was established on September 11, 1899 as the Northern Arizona Normal School. Its name had been changed many times until it gained University status in the year 1966 and became the Northern Arizona University. This University is located in Flagstaff, Arizona.

The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks football team participates in the Football Championship Subdivision of the NCAA. Some of the former players of the team include Archie Amerson, Travis Brown, Michael Haynes, David Lang, Pete Mandley, Todd McMillon, Clarence Moore, Preston Parsons, Willard Reaves, Jeremy Thornburg and Keith O'Neil. The team is currently coached by Jerome Souers.
The Walkup Skydome is home to the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks football team. This arena was inaugurated on September 17, 1977. It has also been the site for the basketball teams of the Big Sky Conference. With a 16,230-seat capacity, this multi-purpose arena also plays host to many commencement ceremonies, concerts, conventions and trade shows.
