The Montana Grizzlies are the athletic teams that represent the University of Montana in the NCAA Division I. The University of Montana was founded in the year 1893. It was a member of the Pacific Coast Conference from the years 1924 till 1950. After that the Grizzlies had joined the Big Sky Conference in the year 1963, when the conference was formed. The University sponsors a total of twelve varsity teams in the NCAA.

The Montana Grizzlies kicked off in intercollegiate football in the year 1897. They participate in the NCAA Division I- Football Championship Subdivision and they have been a notable football team throughout their history and have been one of the most dominant teams in the Big Sky Conference as well as NCAA-FCS sine the 1990s. The Grizzlies have been ranked number 3 in FCS by the coaches’ poll recently. They have won a total of fourteen Big Sky titles and two Division I-FCS titles in the years 1995 and 2001. They play rivalry games called the Brawl of the Wild and the Little Brown Stein, against the Montana State Bobcats and the Idaho Vandals respectively. Bobby Hauck currently coaches the Grizzlies. He has been the head coach of the football team in the University of Montana since the 2003 season.
The Montana Grizzlies football team plays its home games at the Washington-Grizzly Stadium. This arena was inaugurated on October 18, 1986 and it was named after Dennis Washington, who donated funds towards the construction of the stadium. The facility has a seating capacity for 23,117 spectators as of now.
