Hofstra University has long had the unofficial nickname of the Flying Dutchmen; the school's official team name is now "The Pride". It is related to the school's booster organizations that started when a pair of lions became the school's athletic mascots in the year 1980. The official change of the name came in the summer of 2005 as a way to keep pride in the school's roots and was seen as a step towards the future.
Some of the top players that went on to play for the team are Stephen Bowen, Ian "Rocky" Butler, Giovanni Carmazzi, Wayne Chrebet and Willie Colon. Stephen Bowen was born on March 28, in the year 1984 in Holly Ridge, North Carolina. He is an American football defensive end for the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League. The Cowboys originally signed him as an undrafted free agent in the year 2006. He played college football at Hofstra.
