The Eagles are the athletic teams of the Eastern Washington University. The Eastern Washington University is located in Cheney, Washington. It was established in the year 1882. The University was originally known as the Benjamin P. Cheney Academy after the name of its founder, Benjamin Pierce Cheney. In the years 1889 and 1937, its original name was changed to the State Normal School and the Eastern Washington College of Education respectively. After that the name was changed twice post World War II- as the Eastern Washington State College in the year 1961 and it got its present name in the year 1977.

The Eastern Washington Eagles participate in the Big Sky Conference at the NCAA Division I level. The conference was founded in the year 1963 and it is an intercollegiate college athletic conference, affiliated with the NCAA Division I. The University's football program participates in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) in the NCAA. The team has won a total of four conference titles in the years 1992, 1997, 2004 and 2005. Some of the notable football players of the University include Ryan Phillips, Erik Meyer, Kurt Schulz and Jesse Chatman. Erik Meyer, a quarterback who played in the University from the years 2001-2005, won the Walter Payton Award in the year 2005 for the best player in Division I-AA football. He set the record with 166.5 points in his Division I-AA career.
The Eastern Washington Eagles football team plays its home games at the Woodward Field. This arena was inaugurated in the year 1967. The stadium has a seating capacity for 8,600 spectators.
