The Eastern Eagle has been the mascot of the Eastern Michigan University ever since the year 1991. The Eastern Michigan Eagles were formerly known as the Eastern Michigan Hurons. They have won three NCAA Division II national championships and 13 NAIA Division I national championships in five different sports (baseball, men's cross country, men's swimming and diving, men's indoor track & field and men's outdoor track & field. Since the year 2004, the Eastern Michigan Eagles football team plays one home game a year at Ford Field in downtown Detroit in the “Collegiate Clash”. It won the first Fort Field game against Central Michigan University in the year 2004 but then it lost three consecutive matches against Western Michigan University (2005), the United States Naval Academy (2006) and Northwestern University (2007).
In December'1987, EMU achieved its greatest football victory. The MAC Champion Hurons defeated 17 1/2 point favorite San Jose State in the California Bowl. The victory led to an improbable rise from the depths of Division I-A college football. Two years earlier, the team was in danger of losing Division 1-A status.
Rynearson Stadium, an arena in Ypsilanti, Michigan, is the home field of the Eastern Michigan University Eagles. Here the first game was held on Sept 27, 1969. At present, the stadium has a seating capacity for 30,200 spectators. The stadium was named for the late Elton J. Rynearson, Sr., who coached the team for 26 seasons.
